Word Counter

Count words, characters, sentences, and reading time as you type—with case transforms.

About this tool

About

This free online word counter shows live word count, character count, sentence count, paragraph count, and reading time as you type. Transform case and copy stats—no signup, nothing uploaded.

How it works

Paste or type in the editor. Counts update in your browser using simple whitespace and punctuation rules. Reading time assumes about 200 words per minute; speaking time about 130. Case transforms rewrite the text in place so you can copy the result.

Steps

  1. Paste or type your text (or load the sample).
  2. Read live words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and timing.
  3. Optionally apply uppercase, lowercase, title case, or sentence case.
  4. Copy the text or a stats summary when you are done.

Frequently asked questions

Is this word counter free?

Yes. It is free to use with no signup. Count as often as you need.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Counting and case transforms run entirely in your browser. Text is not sent to Utility Tools servers.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time uses about 200 words per minute, a common adult silent-reading average. Speaking time uses about 130 words per minute.

How are words and sentences counted?

Words are non-empty tokens separated by whitespace. Sentences are split on periods, question marks, and exclamation points. Paragraphs prefer blank-line breaks, or non-empty lines when there are no blank lines.

What does Title Case vs Sentence case do?

Title Case capitalizes the first letter of each word. Sentence case lowercases the text, then capitalizes the start of each sentence.

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes in Characters. Characters (no spaces) removes all whitespace so you can see content length without spaces.
