Base64 Converter

Encode and decode text or files to and from Base64 in your browser.

About this tool

About

This free Base64 converter encodes and decodes text and files in your browser. Support for UTF-8 text, file upload, and URL-safe Base64—no signup, nothing uploaded.

How it works

Choose Encode or Decode. Paste text or upload a file (up to 5 MB). Encoding uses UTF-8 bytes for text and raw bytes for files. Decoding accepts standard or URL-safe Base64, ignores whitespace, and shows UTF-8 text or a binary download when the payload is not text.

Steps

  1. Pick Encode or Decode, and turn on URL-safe Base64 if you need it.
  2. Paste text or upload a file.
  3. Copy or download the result.
  4. Use Swap to move the output into the input and flip the mode.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Base64 converter free?

Yes. It is free to use with no signup. Encode and decode as often as you need.

Is my text or file uploaded?

No. All conversion runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to Utility Tools servers.

What is URL-safe Base64?

URL-safe Base64 replaces + with - and / with _, and usually drops = padding. Use it when putting Base64 in URLs or filenames.

Can I encode Unicode and emoji?

Yes. Text is encoded as UTF-8 before Base64, so characters beyond Latin-1 round-trip correctly.

What is the file size limit?

Uploads are limited to 5 MB so the tab stays responsive. Larger files should be handled with a local script or CLI.

Why does decode download a .bin file?

If the decoded bytes look binary (not readable text), Download saves them as decoded.bin. Otherwise you get decoded.txt.
